Il Dottore è un Signore del Tempo, un alieno, che viaggia nel tempo e nello spazio con il TARDIS (Time And Relative Dimension In Space), una specie di nave spaziale che all'esterno appare come una cabina telefonica della polizia britannica, mentre all'interno è enorme. Il Dottore ama molto la Terra e i suoi abitanti e spesso sceglie dei Compagni di viaggio per seguirlo nelle sue avventure. Ovunque e in qualunque momento si trovi, il Dottore si ritrova coinvolto in intricati misteri e battaglie contro creature malvagie.
